Get Course Credit for Katrina Relief Work!

This spring, UC Berkeley students can get course credit for working in Katrina relief efforts, working with displaced children in face-to-face and online learning activities. Berkeley students can also work locally on similar activities with middle school children in East Oakland and receive credit by taking Anthro 136H or by taking independent study credits with Charles Underwood (Anthropology).

Attend the Summer Service Trip

The Magnolia Project Summer Service Trip to New Orleans is a three week service and educational trip from May 25 − June 17 for 100 Cal students (including graduating seniors and graduate students). The purpose of the trip is to assist with the rebuilding effort and moreover, to provide emotional support to the residents in the area. Anyone is welcome to sign up for the trip and as part of our objective to tailor to students and faculty of all backgrounds, we will be offering scholarships for people that cannot afford to go on the trip otherwise. The trip costs $550 for all transportation, lodging, and food. Please talk to us if you need any financial assistance.

On the trip, you will have the opportunity to support community members by:

  • Servicing and distributing food to low income residents
  • Cleaning up the residential environment
  • Gutting and rebuilding houses
  • Communicating with residents about desired changes and solutions
  • Working with youth

Interested in the environment and working on the Gulf Coast? Check out this program!

The National Wildlife Federation has winter and spring projects for week long service in hurricane ravaged Louisiana. The program is titled the NWF Coastal Louisiana Habitat Restoration Initiative and involves getting people into nature to help bring back life to some of America's coastal wetlands. Volunteer groups will be responsible for their own travel to the Gulf, but once there, NWF will coordinate travel, lodging if needed and project expenses. This program is perfect for alternative winter and spring break students who want to get into nature, but don’t have the income to afford other trips. The minimum group size is 10 people and the projects typically run from Sunday through Saturday every week until May. Please see the attached flyer, visit their website or call the office at 703-438-6003 for more information.
